I Feel So Violated

Almost 3 years ago now, I sold a spoon pendant to a girl outside of the Dinosaur BBQ as I was on my way to the 'Party in the Park' in downtown Rochester. I remember thinking about what good fortune I had to sell a necklace before I even got to my destination. And this girl was head over heals impressed with her pendant. I even remember exactly what pendant it was because I had just made it a few days before and had a feeling it would go fast.

Me at a Dead show back in 2009. This is how I sold pendants
back in the day.

This girl has taken it upon herself to steal my idea and start making spoon pendants.  I have known about it for quite a while. Every so often someone would come up to my booth at a show and ask if I worked with her or if I knew her. I was kind of disappointed then, but I figured that if she was not doing craft shows then it was no biggie for me. Live and let live.

2008: First pendants ever made.  If you see me at a craft show, I am
Most likely wearing the one on the left.

Things changed this past weekend while at the Lilac Fest. One of her friends stopped at my booth and told me that she was accepted to a pretty big local show that I was rejected to this year, but was accepted into last year. This totally broke my heart. I gotta say, I felt a little threatened. Hell, I quit my full time job with benefits and a 401k to do what I love. And it seemed when I found out about her doing this local show, that my world was crashing down around me. I felt angry, sad, depressed, defeated, oh and did I mention angry?
I have seen her work, and to be honest, if I knew nothing of craftsmanship and had never seen spoon pendants before, I would think they were the coolest thing since sliced bread. And that brings me to another thing that irks me.  She sells her pendants for $5-$15 more that mine!
All I can say is that I know my pendants are better quality, original and fair priced. Hopefully customers will realize the same. And hopefully there is not a downpour the weekend of her festival, It would just be a shame ;)

Taste of NOLA

Yesterday I participated in the 5th annual Crawfish Festival, a benefit to help rebuild homes in New Orleans. I had so much fun, it was a beautiful day with a great turnout of attendees.

My new banners!!!

On the opposite side of the park, they were cooking up a TON of crawfish. I had never tried them, let alone seen them in person, so today was the day to give them a shot.

I went for the pound o crawfish dinner. They looked innocent enough, like little baby lobsters. Thing was, I had asked about 5 people as I walked back to my booth if they could tell me how to eat them, and not one person had a clue. Once I got back I asked a customer if he knew, and he said something about breaking the head off and sucking out the brains. Well, I would consider myself pretty adventurous when it comes to food, but that crossed the line for me. I ended up eating just the tails and some of the claws.

my pound of crawfish

It was quite the chore to even get the meat out of the little suckers. Not to mention the wet, sticky, gritty mess it made. Even after I washed my hands numerous times, they still smelled like crawfish all day.  I might have been the minority when it came to disliking the fare though. The event ended at 7pm and they ran out of crawfish a little after 5!
The show on the other hand was perfect! People seemed to really dig my spoon pendants. I had a great show and met a bunch of talented, friendly artists.
While eating the crawfish was probably a first and last experience all in one, as far as the Crawfish Festival goes, I will definitely be back for more!

mid day at the fest

I have to give a little shout out to Tiffany Cotsonas from Freckles and Frizz who made my new fabric flag bunting banners (as seen above). I am so proud of my presentation now. I absolutely LOVE the look!! Thanks Tiff!

Lupus Awareness Month: Support The Cause

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that effects 1.5 million people in the US alone. While there are medications available to help treat symptoms of Lupus, (fatigue, joint and muscle pain, skin, heart and lung problems and hair loss are just a few) there is still no cure for the disease.

The color purple is reserved for diseases that are considered 'invisible' or rather, you wouldn't know someone has it just by looking at them. Purple has been deemed the official color of Lupus

http://www.punjabigraphics.com

The universal symbol for Lupus is the butterfly.  The butterfly describes the shape of the rash that some people living with lupus get. It is also the symbol of beauty, rebirth, transformation, new beginnings, freedom and growth.

The spoon symbolizes Christine Miserandino's 'spoon theory' which describes what living with lupus is like.

Odds are, there is someone in your life living with Lupus. Here is your chance to help out a great cause twice. When you purchase  this pendant in the month of May, 50% of the retail price goes straight to the Lupus Foundation  and now that you know a little about the background of Lupus, wearing your beautiful pendant can help spread awareness about the disease.

Available at sunshynesilverwear.com in May

The image if this beautiful butterfly floats between layers of resin which gives it a wonderful three dimensional quality. The background, hand painted violet, shows the distressed texture of the brushstrokes and giving it a uniqueness all it's own.
Each pendant is made to order and takes 3 days for completion.
A complimentary 18 inch cotton and ribbon necklace comes with this piece, free of charge.
